Right, lets put it into practice and try to use these in a song.
Let’s try the old Buddy Holly classic ‘Peggy Sue’. Buddy originally played this
song in A but if this doesn’t agree with you, choose a key that you like from
our chart and strum downwards once whenever you see the number relative to
the chord. Don’t worry about rhythms or strumming patterns for now, we are
just concerned with sounding the basic chords
OK, here we go:
1st 4th 1st 4th
If you knew, Peggy Sue, then you’ll know why I feel blue
1st 4th 1st
Oh Peggy, My Peggy Sue
5th 4th 1st
Oh well I love you girl and I want you Peggy Sue
OK, that’s enough for now with that song. Try playing using different keys and
see if you can hear the structure. If you found this song in a book from the
library it would look like this:
A D A D
If you knew, Peggy Sue, then you’ll know why I feel blue
A D A
Oh Peggy, My Peggy Sue
E D A
Oh well I love you girl and I want you Peggy Sue
Remember to take your time making the chord shapes, speed will come with
practice. Also remember just to strum the strings downwards once when
you see the chord sign above the words. If you have managed to do this,
congratulations!! You’ve just played your very first song as a budding guitarist.
If you are still struggling, don’t worry, it will come. Just persevere and keep
practicing.
