Kingsbarns Golf Links: Many a modern course
architect has tried to replicate the natural wonder
of a true linksland course, but to no avail. That is
not the case at Kingsbarns, a mere infant with a
birth date in 2001. Kyle Phillips and Mark
Parsinen have teamed to create a modern classic
where the holes feel as if they have been there
forever, and from nearly each of these, the player
has a view of the sea. Fittingly, the course is not a
modern 7500-yard monster, but has been crafted at
a more manageable 7200 yards at the tips, with a
par of 72. Phillips and Parsinen understand that
difficulties of links courses come from areas other than length and Kingsbarns is a perfect
example. We love this place! http://www.kingsbarns.com/
St. Andrews (Jubilee Course):
Jubilee, the third oldest of the St. Andrews courses, dates back to 1897 as a 12-hole course by
Old Tom Morris and was expanded to 18 holes in
1905. The routing loops out and back, providing
good variation of views and exposure to the
elements. The course has been tweaked a number
of times over the years, with the most expansive
re-design occurring in 1989—until the Castle
Course opened in 2008, Jubilee was the longest of
the St. Andrews group. The course is slightly
hillier than her sisters, and with no more
vegetation than long grass, the views can be quite
pleasing. The aforementioned long grass is the
primary hazard, so accurate driving is called for
here, while the firm turf and fast greens invite run-up shots. It is the opinion of many better
players that Jubilee is the best test of the St. Andrews family. http://www.standrews.org.uk/
