Day 3 – Saturday, October 14: Excursion to Guimarães. Meet your private driver this
morning for a 50-min private
transfer to the historic city of
Guimarães. One of Portugal’s
most best-preserved medieval
cities, Guimarães has World
Heritage recognition and features
noteworthy monuments,
beautiful architecture and
charming, narrow streets. It is
considered the birthplace of
Portugal because Afonso
Henriques, who went on to be
the first king of Portugal, was
born here in 1110. Upon arrival
in Guimarães, you’ll be led on a
private walking tour which will include visits to Guimarães Castle, which dates to the tenth
century, and the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza, a medieval estate and former residence of the
very first dukes of Braganza.
Your tour will continue through Largo do Toural,
the heart of Guimarães. This central square is
surrounded by historic buildings and traditional
shops, and is an absolute must-see when visiting
this amazing city. You’ll also see Larga da
Oliveira, another historic square, this one featuring
a centuries-old olive tree. After time for lunch at a
charming local restaurant (cost of lunch not
included), you’ll depart Guimarães for Porto.
