• Cawdor Castle: This splendid fifteenth-century castle in Nairn was home to the Thanes
of Cawdor (popularized by Shakespeare in Macbeth).
• Clava Cairns: At this sight, you can visit three, exceptionally well-preserved circular
tombs from the Bronze Age
• Culloden Battlefield: The Battle of Culloden, which took place on April 16, 1746, was
the last battle to occur on British
mainland soil. It pitted the Duke of
Cumberland against the forces of
Charles Edward Stuart, known as
Bonnie Prince Charlie, one of the most
celebrated figures in Scottish
history. This was a struggle of two royal
houses and two religious cultures. The
battle was the final act in the long-
running series of events known as the
’45 Rising. The defeat of the forces
loyal to Bonnie Prince Charlie resulted in
a dramatic change in the way of life of many, particularly in the Scottish Highlands, and
included the end of the clan system as it was then known. You will visit the battlefield,
learn about this remarkable period in Scottish history and proceed through the excellent
visitor’s center.
• Fort George (a cool place for a boy in our view): Located right on the Moray Coast in
a rather windy location, Fort George is the
mightiest artillery fortification in Britain.
Following the 1746 defeat at Culloden of
Bonnie Prince Charlie, George II created the
ultimate defense against further Jacobite
unrest. The result, Fort George, is the
mightiest artillery fortification in Britain, if
not Europe. Its garrison buildings, artillery
defenses and a superb collection of arms
provide a fascinating insight into 18th
century military life.
In the afternoon, make your way into town where we have arranged bicycle rentals. Inverness
hosts many miles of forest trails and “off the beaten track” quiet roads, including the challenging
Great Glen cycle way and the South Loch Ness Trail. Take in the sights as you enjoy a leisurely
ride along the river.
