County, then working closely with Behrens & Hitchock to create the finished product. Now
Michael makes his wines in Relic’s own cave winery off of Soda Canyon Road. Relic is very
much a “boutique” producer, which is precisely why we love it!
Sonoma County - Proposed Winery Visits:
Blue Rock Vineyard (Alexander Valley): A self-proclaimed European-style vineyard, Blue
Rock describes their wines as an accessible luxury. Combining high quality with reasonable
prices, “it’s like
getting upgraded to
first class when you
least expect it.” A
bold claim, yes, but
we’re inclined to
agree. The 100-acre
Blue Rock Estate dates
to 1880, when it was
settled by Italian
immigrants and was
known as Villa Maria
Winery until it shut
down during
Prohibition. The
property was acquired
by Kenny and Cheryl Kahn in 1987 and they have remained diligent about preserving the Old-
World character, including the original olive trees that are more than 140 years old. This
dedication to tradition also means a commitment to sustainability and fostering a symbiotic
relationship between man and nature. As a result, there are no chemicals used in farming on
Blue Rock. Water used in the winery is all recycled to serve as irrigation for the vines, and an
abundance of wildlife still roams the hills of the estate. The winery produces a lovely variety of
reds, including 3 levels of Cab and a Syrah. Their tasting experience is particularly special as it
includes estate olive oils as well as artisanal cheeses.
