Higher education in the era of the fourth industrial revolution
(challenges and the benefits).
Challenges
➢ In our current environment, the educational tools, techniques and curriculum that we have been using
for decades may no longer be fit for purpose. Students need to understand the technologies and their
potential disruptions the future job markets, recruitment and work.
➢ In rural schools, using technology for teaching and learning is still a huge challenge as even teachers
have no or basic idea on how to integrate technology in classrooms. they have not been trained to
acquire those skills.
➢ South Africa is still battling to perfect the Third industrial revolution. Therefore, for 4IR it is still a big
challenge as this process involves both learners and teachers for it to be fully implemented.
➢ The lack of equipment and resource to accommodate 4IR. The government is failing to provide all the
necessities of integrating 4IR schools.
Benefits
➢ Improve international communication, cross culture learning and global citizenship.
➢ It motivates learners to study by making it more fun and interactive and it also prepare them for
future as they connect better with their study material through technology.
➢ as some of the schools those do not have adequate resources, through 4IR they are now able to
access vast libraries of information. And, students who have access to technology do not have to
depend on the teacher for information, they do their own research and critically analyze it on their
own.
