BACK TO SCHOOL – SELF-REINVENTION
“So there I am, I am suddenly sober, I have to be
sober, my doctor said if you drink you die. So I was
trying to fill my time.”
Duff McKagan
For the first few months after leaving hospital McKagan attempted to
adjust to life without drink:
“…I was drinking water for the first time, I literally didn't
drink water for 10 years. I started eating healthy food,
and reading books."
Furthermore, he started mountain biking, trained in a martial art called
ukidokan, and lost 50 pounds and discovered a love of writing,
eventually becoming a columnist for Seattle Weekly and Playboy.
McKagan’s consciousness awakening ramped up when he wandered
into his basement one day and came across a file cabinet containing
GnR's financial records from the previous six years. While thumbing
through the reports he had a bit of a panic attack when he realized he
had no idea what they meant.
“I didn’t know how much we had made or lost on the
tour”
