11 April 2017, the tour bus of German football team
Borussia Dortmund was attacked in Germany, with three
homemade pipe bombs, as it ferried the team to the
Westfalenstadion, Dortmund for the first leg of their
quarter-final against Monaco in the UEFA Champions
League.
Three roadside bombs exploded wounding one of the
team's players, Marc Bartra, and a policeman. Further
casualties were however, avoided due to the strengthened
windows of the bus.
Initially it was thought that the attack was perpetrated by
Islamist terrorists. Letters found at the scene claimed
responsibility in retaliation for German military action
against Muslims of Islamic State. The letters claimed that
further attacks would follow unless Germany withdrew from
the conflict and closed the U.S. military base in Ramstein,
Germany. This was followed by other claims of responsibility
from far-left and far-right groups.
Less than two years earlier, Islamist terrorists had attacked
the Stade de France in Paris during a friendly between
France and Germany, part of a wave of co-ordinated
shootings and bombings in the French capital. (5)
