Appear confident
Asking for things or setting limits can be nerve-wracking. People are usually more receptive to others who are calm, cool and collected when they ask for things. While you might not feel that way, you can do some things to appear confident. This can include making use of eye contact, trying to keep your voice steady (practice helps!), keeping your posture straight, and avoiding fidgeting. Act as if you are confident and the other person will see it.
Negotiate
Sometimes we need to be willing to accept alternatives to what we are asking for. This can include compromising, or thinking of different ways to meet a need. A good negotiation tactic is identifying what you are asking for ahead of time, and what might be acceptable if you can’t get what you are asking for. Negotiation may also require you to give up something, or help the other person out, in order to get what you want. Remember to keep your values and safety in mind when considering any sort of exchanges.
Questions: What sorts of situations have you tried to be assertive? What helps you be assertive with others? What has worked in the past? What do you think you might need to be assertive with now? How can you apply DEAR MAN to be assertive?
