I felt that “God was on my side again,” called

the number, and ordered the tapes. The lady

at the other end of the line told me that they
also had a “special” at this time. I could listen

to Kenneth Blanchard’s Personal Excellence

tapes for a month, pay for them if I liked
them, return them if not. What did I have to

lose? I ordered the program.

Personal Excellence
was about setting

goals based on
personal values. I

decided that, one

way or another, I
was finally going to

get a doctorate.

I gave myself five years, and started to call
myself “doctor.” “Come on, doctor, you can

sit in your bed… Come on, doctor, you can

stand and take a few steps… Come on,
doctor, walk to the kitchen, and eat

something… Come on, doctor, prepare a
lesson for your kids…”
