Natural Disaster and Fire
Once the storm has moved out, contact the Crisis Hotline for direction and next steps. In the event you are
unable to make immediate contact due to interruptions in phone service, Managers should be familiar with
the following processes. If power is not restored, you will be limited on what you can safely do inside the
store.
Facilities will work with the stores and ROD/ROM to coordinate restoration and cleanup crews, as well as
coordinate equipment safety checks.
INSPECT BUILDING
Inspect for structural damage. If your store has suffered major structural damage, immediately
evacuate (or do not enter if you are already outside).
Inspect roofs (entire area and perimeter), roof-mounted equipment, walls, windows (outside and inside),
doors and entire yard.
Clean roof drains and remove debris from roof to prevent drainage problems.
Check foundations and piping.
Restore alarm equipment.
Call key personnel and restoration contractors to start repairs. Make sure safety systems are fully
operational before work is allowed to begin. Use cutting and welding permits.
Begin salvage as soon as possible to prevent further damage.
Cover broken windows and torn roof coverings immediately.
Separate damaged goods, but don’t accumulate combustibles inside buildings.
FIRE SAFETY
DO NOT use candles or other open flames indoors. Use a flashlight to inspect damage.
Maintain as much fire protection in service as possible when sprinkler piping is damaged. Repair
damaged fire protection systems immediately, and follow Red Tag Permit System procedures if the
protection is impaired.
Do not allow hot work until fire protection is completely restored. If hot work is necessary, follow Hot
Work Permit System.
Make contractors responsible for fire safety conditions.
UTILITIES
Make sure all circuit breakers are turned off.
Check for gas leaks – if you smell gas, call 911, notify the local utility company and evacuate the area.
Shut off natural gas at the main valve, if possible.
