Retention Padlet
Timeline (in conjunction with KCSD Board Policy IKE)
If a student has already been retained and is failing again he/she should be referred to RtI.
First Semester
Review all records and identify students experiencing difficulty
Document conferences with parents of students experiencing difficulty
Involve all teachers of these students in developing plans to ensure success
Refer to Response to Intervention (RTI) Team for alternative teaching strategies/further evaluation if indicated
Note on report card that “Progress is Significantly Below Grade Level”
Second Semester
(By the end of January-February)
Complete Retention Form documentation (retention packet)
Hold principal/teacher conference to discuss each child on Retention Form
Notify parents of students considered for retention with a letter from Principal
Note on report card that “Progress Continues to be Significantly Below Grade Level”
(By the end of February-March)
Document required parent conference regarding possible retention
Monitor and formally document progress of each student on retention list
Note on report card that “Progress Continues to be Significantly Below Grade Level; retention is a possibility”
(By the end of March)
Send parents a written progress report and notification of status of retention (remains on list, has shown
significant improvement and no longer considered for retention, has shown some improvement and continues
to be closely monitored until end of year)
Invite parents to participate in another conference
(By the end of April)
Make a final decision regarding retention
Retention
Promoted/placed in the next grade level
Notify parents of the final decision – copy placed in the permanent record
Give parents an opportunity to participate in a conference regarding final decision; retention paperwork signed
(May)
Retention paperwork completed
Original placed in permanent record
Copies to Principal and Intervention Coordinator
