Inpatient Overview - Volumes & Referral
Patterns
• Mental health case volumes have grown
by 7% in Ontario; volumes have
decreased across both sites in the past 3
fiscal years (-10% at SJHC and -17% at
SMH). SJHC and SMH make up 2% and
1% of Ontario market share respectively.
• As a proportion of mental health activity ,
29% of SJHC cases and 11% of SMH
cases are short stay.
• In the past 3 fiscal years, SJHC and SMH have had a similar pattern of applications or orders for psych
assessments (53-67%) and involuntary admissions (23-30%) for full admissions and short stays, although
SJHC has had a decrease in involuntary admissions in the last fiscal year (5-6%).
• Top volumes are derived from TC LHIN patients for both hospitals (61-67%). SJHC also sees large
patients from Mississauga Halton (16%) and Central (7%). SJHC has had a declining number of
homeless cases in the last 3 fiscal years (15% to 7%) while homelessness has consistently accounted for
approximately 20% of SMH cases.
