Inpatient Overview - Volumes & Referral
Patterns
• Orthopaedic surgery volumes have grown
by 5% in Ontario; volumes have
decreased by 2% at SMH and grown by
3% at SJHC
• SJHC and SMH make up 2% each of the
Ontario market share
• As a proportion of inpatient volumes,
Orthopaedics makes up 6% of SJHC and
8% of SMH activity
• This service includes a mix of urgent and elective admissions in which differences exist across sites.
SJHC has 41% urgent and 59% elective while SMH has 20% urgent 80% elective admissions.
• Top volumes are derived from TC LHIN patients followed by Central, and Mississauga Halton
• The majority (80%) of patients are discharged home with or without support. SJHC has 21% of patients
being discharged to a Continuing Care facility*; SMH has 13%. When patients are discharged to another
institution SJHC refers to UHN (Hillcrest) while SMH refers to Bridgepoint.
Providence is referred a minimal number of patients.
