EMPLOYEES
Employees’ “Whys”
According to the interviewed employees, one of the biggest
helping those motivations to continue working at LTHC is being able to
help struggling individuals. Another factor for the employees is
in need the feedback they get from the guests. For example, the words of
one guest were particularly encouraging for employees. The guest
stated, “When [I’m] here, I feel safe and I know it’s going to be
okay.” Upon hearing this, the employees felt touched to know that
they are positively impacting the individuals whom they are helping.
One employee said that the guests “have amazing lives and stories
and they just want to be heard.”
listening Through the interviews, it became clear that the employees
at LTHC are genuinely interested in not only helping people
to guests experiencing homelessness, but also acknowledging their hu-
manity and stories. The act of listening to guests was identified
as being very important; as one employee put it, “You don’t start to
heal until you feel heard.”
Other employees shared that they continue to work with
LTHC because of the responsibility that comes with it. “It is
saving lives. It changes people’s lives.” Employees felt motivated to
serve the people who are waiting each morning for help with LTHC
responsibility opens.
Additionally, employees expressed that they enjoy working
with compassionate coworkers. The compassion from their fel-
low employees has helped to create a supportive workplace, as well
as a hospitable environment for guests. Moreover, working for a
non-profit organization seems to be valuable to the employees. “It’s
time to stop chasing the money because I wasn’t happy when I was;
this job makes me happy even though it’s low paying.” Overall, the
recurring theme in many of the employees’ answers is that they feel
compassionate good knowing they made a difference in another person’s life. “It
makes me so happy when I run into guests from long time ago in
coworkers a grocery store and when they say, ‘Thank you.’ Such worthwhile
job.”
