COLLECTIONS – COLLECTIVE NOUNS
Truth to Teach (Source)
Collective nouns are the names of collections of people, places and things.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the previous lessons on nouns.
2. Show a display of a photograph or stamp album, a bunch of fruit, a PE or tool
kit, a set of chess pieces and an anthology. Discuss the name given to these
items,
3. Show flashcards with various collective nouns written on without the words in
brackets, eg fleet (ships), swarm (insects), flock (sheep, birds), library (books),
shoal (fish), flight (stairs), bunch (flowers, grapes, bananas), choir (singers),
orchestra (musicians), pride (lions), crowd (people), herd (cows, elephants),
forest (trees), kit (clothing, tools), album (stamps, photographs), anthology
(poems), group (people, etc) set (golf clubs, chess pieces, etc), clothes
(wardrobe), children (class), chocolates (box).
Explain that these are all nouns. Ask the children if they can think of a word to
describe these nouns (collective nouns because they describe collections of
people, places or things)
4. Divide the children into teams giving each group the above list to see which
group can name the people, places or things which these collective nouns
describe. The worksheet could be used.
Talk about the word ‘team’ being a collective noun.
5. Gather to share the results.
6. Let the children complete the worksheet or list the collective nouns in their
books. They could draw pictures too.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. The children should appreciate what a collective noun is used for.
2. They should have learnt a number of collective nouns which could be used in
their future written work.
