ONE OR MORE - SINGULAR AND PLURAL NOUNS

            Truth to Teach (Source)

 To introduce the words ‘singular’ and ‘plural’.

 God is a singular, plural, common and proper noun!

 Singular nouns name one person, place or thing; plural nouns name more than
                    one person, place or thing.

 Review the meaning of vowels and consonants.

 Most singular nouns only need an ‘s’ adding to make them plural but those
ending in a consonant and a ‘y’ need ‘ies’ to replace the consonant and ‘y’.

 Singular nouns ending in a vowel and a ‘y’ often just need an ‘s’ adding to make
                    them plural.

            Way to Work (Means)

                1. Review previous lessons on nouns from the first half term.

                2. Show two flashcards, one with singular written on it and the second with plural

                    on it.
Discuss the meaning of the words.

                3. Talk about ‘God’ being singular and yet ‘God’ (the Trinity) is plural. God is a

proper noun, a singular noun, a plural noun and, when Jesus came to earth, he
was man and therefore a common noun!

                4. Hand around a bag of objects for each child to take one. Let each child spell

the singular name of their object, e.g. cup, jug, pen, ruler, book. Ask them to
then spell the plural noun ensuring that the words merely need an ‘s’ adding.

                5. Review vowels and consonants. Talk about most nouns ending in a vowel and a
‘y’ just needing an ‘s’ to make them plural. Give lots of examples:-

donkeys, monkeys, valleys, journeys, displays, Saturdays, chimneys,
                           turkeys, trolleys, trays
