BEING VERBS
Truth to Teach (Source)
Exodus 3:14 ‘God said to Moses, “I AM THAT I AM…. ”’
To learn how to use the verb ‘to be’
The verb ‘to be’ often serves other verbs too.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the previous lessons.
2. Talk about the special verb ‘to be’ which serves to tell us how people, places and things
were, are or will be:—
I was I am I will be
You were You are You will be
He was He is He will be
She was She is She will be
It was It is It will be
We were We are We will be
You were You are You will be
They were They are They will be
Stress the importance of matching the verb correctly to the subject. Give examples of
the wrong use, e.g. We was going home. I is cold.
3. Have these written on pieces of paper (see separate sheet) and let each child take one
out of a bag. Each child should complete a sentence, e.g. I was six. They were going
home.
Hopefully, some children will add another verb into the sentence to follow the verb ‘to
be’ whilst others may add other words.
4. Talk about the being verb serving other verbs in the past, present and future.
E.g. Tom was travelling alone.
The girl is swimming fast.
They will eat their lunch.
