APOSTROPHES 2
Truth to Teach (Source)
Introduce more shortened words with apostrophes.
‘Will not’ becomes ‘won’t’ when shortened
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the previous lesson.
2. Introduce new words which can be shortened – not, had, have, will, shall, would.
Give examples of how apostrophes can be used – can’t, they’d, I’ve, he’ll, I’ll, she’d
Point out that sometimes one letter is replaced by the apostrophe but sometimes two,
three or even four letters are replaced by one ‘flying comma’ or apostrophe.
3. Pin sentences (see separate sheet) around the room with words which could be
shortened to see if the children can identify them to write in their rough books.
4. Gather back to share, writing some of them on the board to help the less able children.
5. Point out that when ‘will not’ is shortened it becomes ‘won’t’,
6. Give the worksheet if it is felt necessary to consolidate the teaching.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. The children should be increasingly confident in using apostrophes in shortened words.
