They could also draw a path with words which describe different ways of travelling. These
poems could be written around pictures of a mountain and/or a path.

        LESSON 3

        Writing a character portrait

Select a character from a book, perhaps a story being read to the children or a Bible story

character. Read a description of the character without giving his/her name to see if the
children can guess the person. Talk about how to write a character portrait based on notes
        on: -
                   • General appearance

                   • Features
                   • Clothes
                   • Voice
                   • Personality
                   • Gifts and talents

Encourage the use of similes (the children may not have learnt about them yet but could still
be introduced to them). E.g. His hair was as black as coal. The children could also draw

        their character.

        LESSONS 4-6

A creative story based on a character portrait

Let the children use their character from Lesson 3 to create a story of their own. This could
be a fiction or non-fiction story. If the character chosen is not suitable, the children could
create a character of their own. Refer to conversation/speech marks and the punctuation

required as taught in the grammar lesson of week 4. Talk about setting, plot, beginning and
        ending, etc.

        LESSON 7

        Writing about Jesus’ character

Referring to the grammar lesson, talk about Jesus’ character, what he may have looked like,

dressed like, his qualities, etc. Let the children write their own description of Jesus.
They could perhaps imagine that they are introducing Jesus to someone who does not know
        him yet.
