APOSTROPHES 1
Truth to Teach (Source)
Review words which are shortened using an apostrophe.
An apostrophe is used to show ownership.
An ‘s’ is added to the noun following an apostrophe if there is only one owner.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the last lessons.
2. Remind the children of words which had letters missing but an apostrophe
added, e.g. didn’t, isn’t, we’d, she’ll
Let the children recall as many such words as they can. Write them on the
board.
3. Explain that apostrophes have other uses; one is to show ownership of
something.
Give lots of examples: - The coat belonging to the boy = the boy’s coat
The field belonging to the farmer = the farmer’s field
The crown belonging to the queen = the queen’s crown
4. Give some examples of the reverse, e.g. John’s toys = the toys belonging to
John. Ann’s friends = the friends of Ann
5. Stress that the apostrophe shows that there is one owner only. Quote Psalm
24:1 – ‘The earth is the Lord’s. There is only one owner of the earth.
6. Let the children try the worksheet.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
