Speech marks highlight people’s speech in the written word.
People should respect what other people say even if they disagree.
To review and extend teaching on speech marks.
Addressing common mistakes made in punctuation.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review previous lessons.
2. Review any common mistakes the children may be making in punctuating their
writing.
3. Remind the children why we punctuate our work to serve the listeners and
readers of our work.
4. Ensure that the children can put speech marks in the following types of
sentence remembering that the speech marks follow full stops, commas,
question marks and exclamation marks.
The teacher said, “Let me help you.”
“Let me help you,” said the teacher.
“How are you?” asked Ben.
Betty shouted, “Stop!”
5. Let the children have further practice in using speech marks by writing
conversations or completing the worksheet.

1. The children should be increasingly confident in using speech marks.
