Science Y1 – Healthy habits – week 4
HEALTHY HABITS:
DESIGNED TO BE WHOLE AND HEALTHY
Truth to Teach (Source)
Psalm 139:14 ‘I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are
wonderful.’
Way to Work (Means)
1. Recap.
With reference to the sheet about teeth, give feedback about who has the
most gaps or the most second teeth.
Healthy habits. Revise these by means of the poster. Check children
have understood the experiment with the egg. Reinforce that germs do
not attack teeth, but only in the presence of sugar do they start to
cause decay.
Our bodies are a gift from God to us. We must look after them carefully
and keep them clean. (How?) The Bible says our body is ‘a temple of the
Holy Spirit’. We need to make sure our body is clean, and cared for
properly as this glorifies God. In the O.T. teams of priests kept the tent
of meeting and later the temple in good order. We work with God
and believe Him for health.
2. God has designed our bodies to keep germs out – eyes, mouth, skin – but
germs do get into our bloodstream at times.
Explain:
• how blood is pumped around our bodies;
• how blood carries oxygen, food and waste;
• how blood has a lot of different things in it;
• how, with a microscope, you can see red and white cells.
3. Explain the action of white blood cells on germs using drama.
• Red blood cells – jumpers on
• White blood cells – jumpers off
• Germs – coats on – they have just come into the body
The red blood cells are travelling around the body carrying oxygen, and
the while cells are circulating too. When germs enter the blood stream,
the white cells wrap themselves around the invaders and kill them. [Some
germs however do get through, so the body makes antibodies to fight the
germs. They remain in your body to prevent you getting that sickness
again.] 63
