Science Y1 – Healthy habits – week 2
We noticed that the hands may all look clean. However if we had proper
equipment like microscopes we would discover that the hands washed only in
water would have most germs, while those washed in hot water with soap
would have fewest. Germs are invisible to the naked eye but real.
4. Explain how a surgeon washes before an operation. [Taps to be put on and
off with his elbows. Washing under running water for 3 minutes with soap.
Hands held high. Special gloves.] We do not always need to wash our hands
to the same degree, but we do need to develop healthy habits, i.e. washing
hands with soap after using the toilet and before handling food.
We wash our hands before attending to cut knees. Why? So that germs do not
spread from her hands into the other person's blood after the skin has been
cut. God has given us skin to protect us from germs. Germs cannot live on clean
skin.
5. If we are to be healthy we need to avoid germs. We need to work with God
and wash carefully as well as believe God wants us to be healthy. Cleanliness
is part of His plan.
6. Ask children to complete the first two sections of the worksheet. Begin to
make a poster to help in the review of healthy habits considered in this topic.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
For children to be made aware of the existence of germs and be convinced of
the wisdom of cleanliness. For the children to appreciate that cleanliness is
characteristic of the Kingdom of God.
