Science Y1 – Healthy habits – week 2
                                                 HEALTHY HABITS:

                                          UNSEEN ENEMIES: GERMS

            Truth to Teach (Source)

Deuteronomy 7:12-15 ‘If we are to be healthy, we need to co-operate with the
Creator's principles of cleanliness as well as be in faith for

                                         it.’

            Way to Work (Means)

            1. Does God ever get sick? Does He ever get a headache? or 'flu? How did God
                    make Adam? Healthy or sick?

How come we get sick? Where did sickness come from? [The Fall.]

             2. Germs exist. There are many different germs. They are very small and are
invisible. Some are useful and some are not.

                          • Germs in milk cause it to turn into yogurt or cheese.

                          • Germs cause fallen leaves to rot and put goodness back into the
                                 soil.

                          • Germs can cause aches, pains, colds, sickness.

             3. Where do germs live?
They love warm dirty places. Can you think of some dirty places? Some like to
                    live in the soil.
                    Others live in water.

Others live in rotting animals or plants.

Could any live on us? What about our hands? (Under nails, in the creases.) Do
you think God has any germs on Him?

How do we beat the germs?
God has given us our skin to keep germs out of our bodies. Washing gets rid of
                    germs.

What do we need to wash our hands? Water. What kind of water? Can we
wash our hands in cold water? Do we need soap?

Plan an experiment with the children to test the effectiveness of washing in
hot water, cold water, hot water with soap, cold water with soap. Ask four
children to go outside and dirty their hands. Test the effectiveness of each

                    method of washing hands. 59
