5. To create plays from a stories.

LESSON 1
The New Year
Show the children a new calendar and talk about the coming year. Establish that only
God knows what everyone will experience over the next twelve months. Read
Jeremiah 29:11. Talk about the value of having dreams, goals, aims, etc in our lives.
Let the children share some of these before writing about them. They may have aims
to improve aspects of their school work, physical activities, in their walk with God,
etc. Their writing could be put into football goal shapes or as a table showing
different areas of their lives or as a piece of prose.
LESSON 2
Writing a speech
Use a well-known character such as King Alfred or Winston Churchill who would have
addressed their armies or people to encourage them in battle or in hard times. If
possible, read part of someone’s speech noting how they addressed their audience,
how they exhorted them to action, perseverance, etc.

Ask the children to select an audience which they may like to address, eg House of
Commons, a sports team, the church, the school. Let the children write notes first
then formulate about half a page of writing as a speech. Stress the importance of
using repetitive phrases which the audience will remember. E.g. We will fight for our
freedom.
We will bring honour to our people. We will play as a team. We will overcome.
