‘HOW’ ADVERBS

            Truth to Teach (Source)

Acts 17:28 ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’

 Review nouns, verbs, adjectives and pronouns.

 Special words are needed to describe how, when and where actions take place.

 Introduce adverbs as words giving more information about the verb.

            Way to Work (Means)

                1. Review the previous teaching on nouns, verbs, adjectives and pronouns.

                2. Read the above verse and explain that God has given us the ability to do so
many different actions, in so many different places, at so many different
times that we need special words to describe them. These words are called
adverbs; they add to the verbs, giving us more information about how, when

and where the actions take place.

                3. Let the children line up in the hall or outside and ask them to walk in different
ways, e.g. walk quickly, walk slowly, walk noisily, walk quietly, walk briskly, walk
                    smartly.

The words ending in ‘…ly’ tell how the walking is done and are adverbs. They
tell us more about the verb ‘walk’.

Stress that not all adverbs end in ‘ly’ but some do.

                4. Give the children some more instructions inside the classroom, e.g. laugh
cheerfully, jump energetically, sleep peacefully, wake quickly, wave

                    enthusiastically, sing joyfully.

                5. Write lots of ‘how’ adverbs on the board. Some adverbs can be made from
adjectives, e.g. gentle – gently, slow – slowly.

                6. Write sentences on the board for the children to identify the ‘how’ adverb,
                    e.g.
