‘WHERE’ ADVERBS
Truth to Teach (Source)
Acts 17:28 ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’
As well as describing how actions take place and when they take place,
adverbs also tell us where they take place.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the two previous lessons.
2. Train the children to search for the verb in the sentence before looking for
the adverb. Remind them of how to look for the noun before looking for the
adjective.
3. Explain that once the verb is found the children should ask ‘how’, ‘when’ and
‘where’ the action was done.
4. Write four words on the board: -
nowhere, anywhere, somewhere, everywhere
Remind the children that these are compound words and ask them to identify
the two parts of each one. ‘Where’ is common to them all so gives a clue that
it is an adverb.
Give examples of sentences with these words in them, e.g.
I looked everywhere. A mouse is hiding somewhere.
Everywhere I go there is noise. I like going anywhere.
5. Write other ‘where’ adverbs on the board for the children to put into
sentences.
there, here, down, up, above, across
(NB some of these can be adjectives inside, outside and prepositions too)
