Truth to Teach (Source)
John 3:19 ‘Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of
light because their deeds were evil.’
Antonyms are words which are opposites.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review previous lessons, defining a noun, verb, adjective, pronoun, adverb,
synonym and homophone.
2. Introduce antonyms as opposites. (More able children could be introduced to
the word ‘antonym’.) Go through some commonly used opposites, e.g. big,
small.
3. Read and discuss the above verse, explaining that, as Christians, we are in the
Kingdom of God but there is also the Kingdom of Satan, or darkness.
4. Read Galatians 5:19-25 and Colossians 3:5-14.
Make two lists and let the children suggest words for each list, e.g.
Kingdom of God Kingdom of Darkness
light darkness
good evil
honesty dishonesty
righteousness unrighteousness
joy sadness
generosity meanness
patience impatience
5. Talk about Satan being called the Anti-Christ. Explain that ‘anti’ means
opposite.
Explain that Jesus often used opposites/contrast to help people understand
his teaching, e.g. the Wise and Foolish Builders in Matthew 7.
