‘WHEN’ ADVERBS
Truth to Teach (Source)
Acts 17:28 ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’
Review nouns, verbs, adjectives and pronouns.
Special words are needed to describe how, when and where actions take place.
As well as describing how actions take place, adverbs tell us when they take
place.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the previous teaching on nouns, verbs, adjectives and pronouns.
2. Talk about adverbs telling us how actions take place as in the previous lesson.
Explain that adverbs also tell us when actions take place.
3. Let some children take a card bearing a ‘when’ adverb out of a bag (see
separate sheet). Ask them to put the word into a sentence to share with the
class. Let the rest of the class put up their hand when they hear a ‘when’
adverb.
4. List these adverbs on the board as they are identified.
5. Read out a list of ‘how’ adverbs and ‘when’ adverbs asking the children to put
up their hand if they hear a ‘how’ adverb and point to a clock if they hear a
‘when’ adverb.
6. Let the children either write sentences containing ‘when’ adverbs or complete
the worksheet.
Learning for life (Fulfilment)
1. The children should be increasingly confident in recognising and using ‘how’ and
‘when’ adverbs.
