            Way to Work (Means)

If possible, invite a journalist to talk to the children about how he/she reports
            spoken conversation.

                1. Review previous lessons.

                2. Let the children work in pairs to find out information about each other in a set
                    time.
Let them report back to the class sharing the information as reported speech.

E.g. Hannah said that she was born in 2001 and has lived in London all
her life. She enjoys working on a computer and her favourite

                                  subject is maths.

                3. Review the meaning of direct and reported speech. They can be distinguished
by the use of, or lack of, speech marks.

Explain that reported speech may begin with: - Susan said that… John
                    explained that…

                4. Discuss with the children when it is appropriate to use the different kinds of

                    speech.

                5. Let the children complete their worksheet or let them go with the journalist to
interview a number of prepared people around the school. The children could
then write up the interview as reported speech. They could take notes as the

                    interview is being conducted.

                6. Gather back to share if time allows.
