I
WAS INSPIRED TO WRITE THIS BOOK FOR A FEW MUTUALLY RELATED
reasons. First, I know someone out there -- down and still struggling -- who
could benefit from one of the takeaways. For fifteen months, I witnessed first-
hand, how some Americans live on the streets -- from Lafayette and New Orleans to
Atlanta and Kansas City -- through no fault of theirs. Although homelessness and
poverty are inextricably connected, a fine line between living in a warm and secured
home and finding yourself destitute and on the streets because of one, or a
combination of the following reasons: mental illness; loss of job; and most notably,
family discourse. Each will be discussed in detail.
Secondly, although much has been discussed and written about the lack of
motivation and growing apathy within these communities, I hope, in sharing the
various steps I took while slogging my way out of the mayhem, would be a good
enough reason to get up, dust yourself off, and keep your head up high; then move
forward.
