job as department heads as well as spend inordinate amount of time coaching
employees who, per the HR director, shouldn't have been interviewed, let alone
hired. And, the expense in bringing a consulting firm to clean up the mess and make
the department appear up-to-par in the books just before the close of the year.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying every business out there has this "ass
back" culture in place; there are some organizations and departments which are
up-to snuff with their hiring -- including the caliber of hires. Without a doubt, you
know these are the Crème de la Crème when you meet them.
For a practitioner of my craft, always searching for the best approach, to
maximize philanthropic support, writing and/or re-writing -- including -- coming up
with the best practice deliverance of fund development articles (for major gift
initiatives, capital campaigns, annual appeals, or special events) is of paramount
importance. Be you the executive vice president (EVP), senior vice president (SVP),
vice president (VP) or executive director (ED), you must -- at the end of the day --
justify the use of limited resources. As the division head, one has the fabulous duty
to lead an institution and nurture individuals within the community.
Therefore, what follows are first-hand account of the events from January 26,
2015 through May 27, 2016. I have chosen to present them as a sort of series of
recollections and imprecise remembrance, rather than in chronological order.
Fifteen months -- excluding Punta Cana -- are too long a period to remember and
account for everything and anything. The objective here is to interest and engage you
as much as possible in some, if not all, the activities involved in my period of
pandemonium and chaos. I believe this method truly embodies how I continue to
experience those memories and events. Even in the recollection of these events, I'm
at awe -- how they occurred -- as well as astounded about the way the recollections
