Use, Occupancy, and Construction
Group H is divided among 5 classifications based on their hazard risk, rather than
the type of building involved. These classifications are:
H-1: Buildings containing materials that pose a high detonation hazard,
including explosives, detonable pyrophoric materials, and unstable (reactive)
materials.
H-2: Buildings containing materials that pose a deflagration hazard, or a
hazard from accelerated burning, including certain classes of combustible or
flammable liquids, combustible dusts, flammable gases, and more.
H-3: Buildings containing materials that readily support combustion or that
pose a physical hazard, including consumer fireworks, certain classes of
flammable or combustible liquids, unstable (reactive materials), water-
reactive materials, and more.
H-4: Building containing materials that are health hazards, including
corrosives, highly toxic materials, and toxic materials.
H-5: Semiconductor fabrication facilities and comparable research and
development areas in which hazardous production materials (HPM) are used,
and where the aggregate quantities of those materials exceeds a specific
amount under 307.1
