AFFORDABLE LIVING
AFFORDABLE HOUSING COMMUNITIES TO GET NEW AMENITIES
More than $1.5 million in grants have gone to six Michigan housing programs that help seniors age
in place. The two-year grants are part of a $19 million initiative by the affordable housing nonprofit
Enterprise Community Partners that seeks to reduce older adults' isolation and improve their at-home
services. The grants are intended to provide relief for residents but also to show that programs are
scalable.
As one of the recipients, Samaritas was awarded a Thome Aging
Well grant ($240K) to replicate our Healthy Well-being and
Education Program across all senior affordable living centers and
persons with disabilities homes. Funded by the Edward N. and Della
L. Thome Memorial Foundation, a Bank of America trustee, this
grant will pay for more supportive services for residents of group
homes who have disabilities. Heidi Raubenolt, Samaritas Executive
Director of Community Services says, "The creation of outdoor
gathering spaces will make it easier to conduct group activities
and cooking classes or other programs, like gardening and square
dancing, and will provide residents with enrichment and social
connections with their neighbors."
Samaritas plans to expand its affordable housing footprint
across the state. For more information about how you or your
company can get involved in providing these resources to seniors,
families and people with disabilities, contact Patricia Sliter at
patricia.sliter@samaritas.org. If you have property or a building that you'd like to donate that may be
renovated for affordable housing, contact Joel Lautenbach at joel.lautenbach@samaritas.org.
