2024 has been quite the year. Yet, in the midst of all the change and deepened mission focus, Samaritas has remained steadfast in its
mission to serve people as an expression of the love of Christ. I’d like to reflect on how far we’ve come by honoring our legacy and
looking ahead to the future.
Our journey began in 1934, focused on caring for children, and since then, we’ve expanded to serve thousands of families. In 1955,
we became Michigan’s designated agency for refugee resettlement, a mission we proudly continue today. In 2016, we reintroduced
ourselves as Samaritas, broadening our mission to include mental health and addiction recovery services. In 2022, we completed our
10,000th adoption and co-founded the Detroit Refugee Network, which welcomed Afghan families seeking refuge. For 75 years we
have extended this same support to families from Ukraine, Syria, Iraq, Venezuela, Burma, Democratic Republic of the Congo,
Haiti, and many other nations offering them safety and hope here in Michigan.
We’ve also grown our affordable housing efforts, with our 16th project in Spring Lake providing even more homes for Michigan
families.
As we look to the future, we are committed to making a deeper impact in four core areas, drilling deeper into service and providing
more holistic care across our programs and beyond - signaling a new era of possibilities:
Housing: ensuring stable, affordable homes for those in need.
Humankind: putting children and families first by helping families to thrive
Healing: expanding mental health and substance use care to meet growing needs.
Hope: offering new beginnings for refugees and displaced families seeking a fresh start.
Together, we are entering this new chapter with hope and dedication, expanding our continuum of care to better serve individuals
and families with a focus on seeing each client as someone made in the image of God and powered by Jesus' words in Matthew 25:
‘truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
And now, here we are, 90 years strong. We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us, inspired by their legacy of love and
service. But we also look ahead—to new opportunities, new partnerships, and new ways to make a difference in the lives of those
who need us most. Together, we can embrace this exciting change with open hearts and hopeful spirits.
Thank you for standing with us in this mission, and for believing in the power of love to transform lives.
