TOORAK HOTEL TORQUAY
22 TOORAK HOTEL TORQUAY
The second of our Summer tournaments at the Toorak Hotel
proved very popular. As usual we ran an opening evenings
bowls drive as a “get to know you” event, which was won by
Bev Williams, Brab Hallowes & Arthur Cuff. In the Singles final
Bryn Jones faced Bridget Hallowes in what turned out to be a
cracking final that ended up 6 all after the full ten ends and in
an exciting sudden death end Bryn managed to score the vital
shot that gave him a 7 - 6 victory.
In the Triples quarter finals Brian Latham, Irene Roberts
& Doug Owen swept aside the challenge of Jill Owen, Barbara
& Don Baker taking thirteen shots without reply. Elaine Bull,
Singles Winner Bryn Janet Coombes & Mel Bowan were pushed a little by Diana Di-
Singles Winner Bryn
Jones with finalist amond, John Harvey & Bryan Willoughby but managed to
Jones with finalist
Bridgett Hallowes outscore them for a 7 - 5 win. A 1 - 2 - 3 score by Ann Hancock,
Bridgett Hallowes
Joy Bowan & Des Seymour was vital in their 9 - 6 win over Caryl
Doel, Val Duery & Graham Whittock.
The last match of the round was low scoring until
Norman Dunn, June Hyde & Bryn Jones struck with a
three and then a four for a 10 - 3 result over Janet Cuff,
Bridget & Brab Hallowes.
Norman, June & Bryn were again successful in
the semi-finals, beating Ann Hancock, Joy Bowan &
Des Seymour 8 - 6. The other semi-final saw Brian
Latham, Irene Roberts & Doug Owen apparently coast-
ing to victory at 7 - 3 with two ends to play but a single
and a three on the last end brought Elaine Bull Janet
Coombes & Mel Bowan level at 7 all.
The sudden death extra end was very hard Seated Triples Winners Norman
fought but in the end Brian, Irene & Doug managed a Dunn, June Hyde & Bryn Jones
two for a 9 - 7 win. However, they were under the cosh with finalists Brian Latham, Irene
in the final and quickly found themselves 2 - 9 down Roberts & Doug Owen
after five ends an three ends later they concede a 15 -
2 victory to Norman Dunn, June Hyde & Bryn Jones with the last two ends unplayed.
In the Pairs, three of the quarter finals ended in two shot victories, Sally Millin & Norman
Dunn beat Irene Roberts & Barbara Saunders 6 - 4, as did
Diana Diamond & John Sheppard by the same scoreline over
Bridget & Brab Hallowes. Two shots also separated Joy
Bowan & Peter Barter from Val & Brian Latham, with Peter &
joy winning 9 - 7. In the last semi-final, things seemed to be
going the way of Anne Shorter & Vic Hildersley as they led 7
- 3 after six ends but a stunning four end five shot run by Mel
Bowan & Gram Whiitock gave them an 8 - 7 win.
In the semi-finals they needed big scores after they were
2 - 8. They then scored a three and needed another on the
last end to level the match but in the end it was Joy Bowan &
Peter Barter who scored a three for an 11 - 5 win.
The other semi was a one sided affair with Diana Dia-
mond & John Sheppard racing away from 2 - 2 with an un-
Seated Pairs winners Joy beaten run of nine shots for an 11 - 2 win over Sally Millin &
Bowan & Peter Barter with Norman Dunn. Diana & John could not repeat this perform-
Norman Dunn & Sally Millin ance in the final with Joy Bowan & Peter Barter romping away
for a 12 - 2.win.
