The Short Mat Section of Shirley Com-
munity Association held its annual
bowling competition during the Sum-
mer, with about a quarter of the mem-
bership taking part in the six
competitions and was watched by a
Men’s Pairs Winners Colin Pike & Derek Warren number of members, including the
with Shirley Community Centre Chairman Shirley Community Centre Chairman,
Alan Bayley in the centre Alan Bayley.
In the Men’s Pairs Colin Pike &
Derek Warren fought their way through to the final and faced Roy Matthews & Gerald Lyndon.
A three on the opening end gave Colin & Derek a flying start but Roy & Gerald struck back with
a two to close the gap to a single shot. However, Colin & Derek then scored four successive
singles in a hard fought match to lead 7 - 2 after six ends and they then went on to win 10 - 6
over the regulation 11 ends.
The ladies Pairs was a humdinger of a
match that first swung one way then another.
Audrey Lowe & Lesley Parkes struck first
with a stunning four on the opening end and
followed this up with a three to lead 7 - 0. An
exchange of two’s gave Audrey & Lesley a 9
- 2 lead after just four ends.
Their opponents were Pat Pope & Mar-
garet Farmer who then managed to find an-
other gear to score nine shots over the next
four ends, including a four of their own, to
lead 11 - 9.
Back came Audrey & Lesley with two Ladies Pairs Winners
singles to level the final going into the last Margaret Farmer & Pat Pope
end, where Pat & Margaret scored a two for with Alan Bayley in the centre
a 13 - 11 win in a very hard fought final.
The mixed Triples saw Colin Pike, Roy
Witts & Audrey Docker in action against
Jim Cotterell, Margaret Farmer & Janet
Facey. The match turned out to be a
somewhat one-sided affair, which was
completed in 8 ends, with Colin Pike’s
team winning 9-2 with an end still to go.
The mixed fours was also a one-
sided match. Although Derek Warren,
Les Bloomer, Margaret Witts & Janet
Facey led 3 - 0 after two ends, Albert
Collins, Lesley Parkes, Jill Morgan &
Sheila Tandy then took complete control
