The East Coast Triples began in earnest after breakfast on Tuesday. By the end of the first 29
day’s play two Cambs triples led the way after four wins and a draw each. Gerry Russell,
Gill Kent & Tony Kent of Sutton St Edmond had opened with a 6-6 draw against Geoff Ward’s
triple before reeling off four straight wins.
Fellow Cambs bowlers Lonnie & Maureen Fyson, playing with Sprowston’s John Poynter,
were also held to a 6-6 draw in their fourth game against Pauline McCallum, Arthur Jackson &
Mac McCallum of Durham & Easingwold but won all their other games. Linda Hall, Barbara Hadler
& Geoff Hall of Kent had lost their opener by just 6-5 against Avril Walker’s Anglian Windows triple
but the four wins that followed left them in third place on eight points.
McCallum’s Durham/Easingwold triple and Geoff Payne’s Norfolk triple were the next two
triples on seven points apiece. Last year’s winners skipped by Anglian Windows’ Mike Boswell
found themselves in thirteenth place
level with last year’s runner-ups
skipped by Margaret Barley of Suf-
folk on four points each.
When Wednesday’s sessions were
over Tony Kent led the way with 16
points and +40 shots but Norfolk’s
Alice Payne, John Jarvis & Geoff
Payne were now level with them on
points while Maureen Fyson’s triple
had slipped two points behind. Mc-
Callum’s triple were still in fourth
place with 13 points.
But Derek Barley, Paul Swain
& Margaret Barley of Suffolk’s Carl-
ton Colville had moved up to fifth
place winning four out of the five
games they played to reach 12 points
East Coast Triples Champions Gerry Russell, with +23 shots.
Gill & Tony Kent with Potter's Richard Beare Also still in the running were five
other triples all on 12 points. These
triples were skipped by Malcolm Reynolds, David Lorraine, Ben Atkinson, Geoff Hall & Joe Brown.
Thursday proved to be a fabulous day for Tony Kent’s triple as they powered their way to 28
points with six straight wins but a poor day for Payne’s triple saw them slip off the pace losing four
out of their six games to fall into seventh place. Sheila Lorraine, Michael Ridge & David Lorraine
of North Yorks moved into contention earning ten points to take
second place on 23 points while Maureen Fyson’s triple held on
to third place with 22 points.
Mac McCallum’s triple were showing true grit as they took
their total points tally to 21. Three triples were now on 20 points,
Margaret Barley’s triple, Mike Boswell’s triple & Geoff Payne’s
triple.
Just two points were needed by Tony Kent on the final day
to clinch victory and there was no stopping them as they won
their last three games in style to finish on 34 points while David
Lorraine’s triple finished as runners-up with 27 points.
Two wins for Maureen Fyson’s triple was enough to earn
them the third place prize with 26 points. Three triples finished
on 23 points headed by Mac McCallum’s on +54 shots in fourth Selwyn Goldsmith
place, Mike Boswell’s triple with +43 shots in fifth position and
Margaret Barley with +42 in sixth place.
