In the very last round however England came unstuck against Wales, who were trying to 7
qualify for the semi-finals and they won 12 - 7. Ireland also needed to win and by the
biggest score they can. They beat the Netherland’s 17 - 9 but with Wales victory over Eng-
land they did not have enough shots for second place. Germany finished with another win for 8
points. Ulf Schadel & Mirko Limmer can be very proud as Germany’s best players.
The first semi-final saw Wales, Paul & Andrew Hudson taking on England’s Jack Sheppard
& Gareth Stanway but it was not to be the Welsh Pairs day as they were comprehensively beaten
17 - 5 by England. The other semi-final was an all-Ireland affair with Pauline & Joseph Beattie
against James Mullan & Lorenzo Graham. Pauline & Joseph set their stall out in the opening two
ends with five shots and that set the pattern for the match as they eventually won 16 - 6.
The final was England’s only chance of a title but Pauline & Joseph once again started well
and after three ends led 7 - 0. After this Stanway & Shephard held their own but in the end the 15
- 8 scoreline to Ireland reflected the seven shot difference they opened up with.

In the Triples “A”

main protagonists
Were England,
Scotland and
Wales and all
three opened up
with victories. All
three repeated
this in the second
round and again in
the third round.
On the sec-
ond day, the open-
ing round saw Wales and Ireland win but the wheels came off the England Waggon as Elise Daniel,
Gareth Davies & Keith Hawkins lost 17 - 10 to Belgium’s Johan Stevens, Dominique Poot & Jozef
Smeers.
A round later and England lost again 9 - 10 in a cracking game against Wales’ Ceri Jones,
Dorian Hudson & Jonathan Gladstone, despite winning seven of the twelve ends. In the next round
Wales went on their merry way but Ireland’s Billy Taffe, Sean Trainor & Paddy Hanlon came un-
stuck against an England trio still stinging from their two defeats. Ireland scored a five on the last
end to add some respectability from 7 - 15 to lose 12 - 15. The third day arrived and in the last
round England lost again 8 - 9 to Sweden’s Robin Hansson, Marcus & Christer Almen. The big
clash between Wales and Ireland ended in a 13 - 9 victory to Ireland, which gave Ireland 1st place
in the table and entry into the semi-finals along with 2nd placed Wales.
In group “B”, newcomers Cyprus (David Richards, Catherine & James Allison), opened with
a tough match against the experienced England
trio of Jason McLean, James Neal & Ben Pay,
who won 19 - 4.
Ireland’s Willie Lennox, Clarke Hill & Alan
Paul romped home 18 - 5 against the Isle-of-Man,
whilst Wales’ Chris, Henry & Mike John were
pushed hard by Belgium’s Roger Van Petegem,
Andre Engels & Gavart Willy, who won seven of
the twelve ends but three fours along the way
helped Wales to a 16 - 11 win.
