LAKESIDE TOURNAMENT
As usual play started in the Pairs on Monday afternoon
but the first event to be concluded was the evening bowls
drive, where all the players get mixed together as a fun
“get to know everybody” bowls drive. Emerging as the
winners Clive Wilkins, Trevor Martin, Alison Eastgate and
Ken Clark were clear winners with a shots plus of 19.
Play continued in the Pairs until Wednesday after-
noon when the knockouts commenced. In the quarter fi-
nals, Margaret Howe & Margaret Hinson had a really tight
game against Norma & Clive Wilkins but in the end the
two Margaret’s emerged as 8 - 7 winners.
Singles Winner Ken Clark Verity Prior & Barbara Buse were doing well at 7 -
and finalist Jennifer Matthews 5 but Michael Leale & Daphne Sheppard stepped up their
game and took the closing four ends for a 12 - 7 win. The other two quarter finals were one-
sided affairs. First Ken Clark & Frank Davis beat Trevor
Martin & Jennifer Matthews 14 - 4 and the Sheila &
Roger Booker recorded a 14 - 0 clean sheet against
Alison & Brian Eastgate.
Sheila & Roger were then locked in battle against
Ken Clark & Frank Davis and it ended at 6 all after 10
ends but it was Ken & Frank who edged through to the
final with a single for a 7 - 6 win. Michael Leale &
Daphne Sheppard seemed to be out against Margaret
Howe and Margaret Hinson, finding themselves 8 - 10
down going into the last end but Michael & Daphne
scored a stunning three to scrape through 11 - 10.
The final was held later in the week and started
with Ken Clark & Frank Davis taking an 8 - 0 lead after
just three ends. Daphne Sheppard & Michael Leale Seated Pairs Winners Ken Clark
fought back to 6 - 9 but Frank & Ken closed out the & Frank Davis with Michael Leale
final with an 11 - 6 win. and Daphne Sheppard
The Single semi-finals saw Trevor Martin record
a 10 - 6 win over Peggy Simpkins, whilst Jennifer Matthews was a runaway 10 - 1 winner over
Sheila Booker. Meanwhile Ken Clark & Michael Leale
were locked in battle with Ken edging through 7 - 6.
Completing the round Brian Eastgate scored a 9 - 5
victory over Colin Pike. Ken then eased through his
semi-final 8 - 2 over Brian Eastgate.
The other semi was very hard fought and
swung one way then the other and finished 7 all after
the full ten ends between Trevor Martin and Jennifer
Matthews but on the sudden death extra end it was
Jennifer who edged through to the final.
Jennifer then gave Ken Clark a very hard game
after being five shots behind but in the end Ken won
7 - 6.
The Triples quarter finals started with an 11 - 7
win by Eileen Bellett, Sheila & Roger Booker over
Seated Triples Winners Barbara & Frank Davis, Ann Rust & Lesley Dack.
