14 West Acre
Carpet
Bowls
Four members from
the West Acre Carpet
Bowls Club travelled to
Mundford to play in the
“Brian Perry Charity
Shield”. The Competi-
tion has been running
for several years but
this was the first year
we had decided to
Mick Turpin, Belinda Bush, Gordon Coulting, Ken Dunton enter a team. We were
Mick Turpin, Belinda Bush, Gordon Coulting, Ken Dunton
up against some top teams and some we had never heard of before.
The first two teams, Wiggenhall and Dersingham, we had played against before and al-
though both were very close, we managed to beat them. Our next team Thurston 1 (from Bury),
we had never played before but again we beat them. Our next opponents were “That’s All
Folks”, a very good team and whom we have come up against them before. Although we did
not beat them, we managed to get enough points to go through to the semi-final, which was
against another team we have never heard of “Fulbourn”. We beat them and found ourselves
in the final with “Thurston 2”.
This was a very tight game with only 1 point in it but we did it and we won the shield.
West Acre now have another trophy to add to their collection, which is on show in the Village
Hall. We have several trophies now, so that we might have to have another shelf to put up in
order to display them.
West Acre young players
The Club is very pleased to have two young players that enjoy playing during the School hol-
idays. Youth represents the future of all sports. Matthew Boughen has been coming to the
Bowls club since he started primary School and is now coming up to 15 years. He thoroughly
enjoys playing and has also tried to get some of his friends to come and have a go.
His brother Joshua has joined the club this summer and is doing very well with Encour-
agement from other members of the club. He is really beginning to get as good as his brother,
and his mother and Nan who also play. In the pictures - Joshua left and Matthew Right.
