It was the same on the deciding end with Horseshoes holding 2 when Tony Ealham
with his last wood pushed the jack back with a great wood to hold shot & game position 19
but Paul (Churchill) Bax had other ideas and with an even better wood picked up the
jack & trailed it back for the winning shot to take the Charity Trophy.
The day was a great success & thanks to everyone including all the players & umpires
who helped us raise £650 for Hearing dogs for deaf people. Also a big thanks to Debbie &
Granville in the kitchen who prepared a lunch fit for a banquet.

BRIEF LIVES
Jean Mary Orpin, a founder member of East Hanningfield SMBC and better known as
Jenny sadly passed away. She helped raise money for club & charities by playing,
cooking & selling raffle tickets on competition days. She had to give up playing Short
Mat Bowls as she was confined to wheelchair and turned to supporting her local club
as well as Essex County & Welsh National team. It was very fitting that the last game
of bowls she watched was of her club winning another open event earlier in the day.
Jenny will be sadly missed by Husband Tony, children, grandchildren, great grand-
children, & everyone in bowls who knew her.

PRESS NOTICE
After much discussion, the ESMBA Management Committee has ratified its pre-
vious decision to withdraw from the Bowls Development Alliance (BDA). The
BDA had been advised of our concerns and although some were addressed it was agreed that
a 4-year financial commitment of £18,000 plus a further £15,500 toward the coaching scheme
could not be justified to our membership based on the results shown over the past 4 years.
The ESMBA Management Committee has also decided to align with the Association of
Bowling Codes, (ABC), alongside British Crown Green, English Bowls Federation, English Bowls
Coaching Society and the Safeguarding panel. The ABC is a newly formed association that in-
tends to provide mutual cross code co-operation to promote the sport at an affordable and am-
icable level.
It is with great pleasure that the English Short Mat Bowls Association (ESMBA), together
with The British Crown Green Bowling Association (BCGBA), and the English Bowling Federa-
tion (EBF), have joined together to form The Association of Bowling Codes (The ABC of Bowls).
The previous Safeguarding Panel will advise the ABC of Bowls and its constituent NGBs, Coun-
ties and Clubs on all Safeguarding matters. The English Bowls Coaches Society (EBCS), the
British Crown Green Coaching Scheme and The English Short Mat Bowling Association, have
formed a Coaching Forum under the ABC of Bowls to advise on all coaching matters.
The ABC of Bowls aims are to Identify Funding opportunities and apply for that funding for
the benefit of all members. It will also identify good practice within the Family of Bowls and share
such practices with all NGBs. Further it will identify savings on products and services for the
benefit of all members. It will maintain links with Sport England, Sports Coach UK, The Sport
and Recreation Alliance and any other body nationally or locally deemed to be of help to the
Family of Bowls. Between the three National Governing Bodies there are some 4500 Clubs and
some 275,000 bowlers who through the ABC of Bowls will have a National Voice.
