8 MONAGHAN PAIR
ARE THE LADIES
CHAMPIONS
The ladies pairs featured Bernadette
Smyth and Peggy Duffy from Monaghan
Zone and Esther Forster and Margaret
Nelson from Western. Little separated
the two pair for the first 5 ends with the
Monaghan pair leading 5 - 4.
6 shots over the next 3 ends
pushed them into a 9 - 5 lead only to see
their opponents pull back to 9 - 9 with 3
ends left.
The 13th end was tied and with both picking up shots on the next two ends it was tied after
15 ends at 10 - 10. While the Monaghan pair had looked to be heading for a win, it was the ladies
from Clogh who grabbed victory with 2 shots on the tie end.
THIRD WIN FOR MID ANTRIM TRIO IN THE LADIES TRIPLES
The ladies triples produced a 3rd succes-
sive win for Pauline Beattie, May Cassells
and Rachel Cassells as they proved too
good on the day for the Mid Down triple
of Wilma Sadair, Yvonne Hall and Joyce
Green.
The Armagh triple dominated the
game from the 5th end at which stage
they were 5 - 4 up. Successive counts of
2, 2, 2 and 3 saw them move into a 14 -
4 lead after 9 ends. The Mid Antrim triple
never really got to grips with the mat los-
ing out by 18 shots to 4.
DEFENDING CHAMPS LOSE THE OVER 55’s PAIRS
What has often been referred to as the golden oldies competition, better known as the over 55's,
produced on the best games of the day. Defending champions Robert Black and Doran Turtle
from Mid Antrim Zone met Danny McDonald
and Sean Conroy from Armagh zone.
In what was an excellent game, the lead
swung two and fro with little separating the two
pairs throughout. After 7 ends there was only
one shot between them with Conroy 5 - 4 up.
Turtle then moved into a 2 shot lead after
9 ends. The Armagh pair came back quickly to
lead 9 - 8 but a 3 for the defending champions
in the 13th end saw them lead 11 - 9.
Conroy picked up 3 on the 14th to lead by
1 but was pegged back on the last end to see
a tie end required. The game went to the last
bowl with Conroy producing a title winning shot.
