            Bob
l was surprised to see the item his THE JACK LIVE' by Peter Sheather in the Winter 38
Edition of the Indoor Bowler.I had always believed that if the jack became dead, i.e off the
carpet as described in Law C 3 the end had come to an end and should be replayed, under Law
C 7. l had also thought that if the jack had been knocked completely into the ditch as shown by
the right hand jack in Peter's diagram it was still live, and the end should continue.
An earlier toucher being knocked into the ditch could move the jack or take shot, or a sub-
sequent bowl coming to rest at the position occupied by the word NO furthest to the right on Peter's
diagram could also take shot provided, of course, that it did not break the Jack Line It seems that
a jack in the ditch is treated by exception as dead by Law C 2. but live by Law C 3 (Law C 2 does
not say that it is live and C 3 does not say it is dead.)

Ed - a question of terminology I think. In most clubs (I have found), players often refer to a
Jack fully in the ditch as dead. Of course it isn’t really as you say it can be moved by a toucher.
Peter has obvously used the common term and said no to a live jack. I prefer to use the term
DITCHED and when asked if a jack is live or not to a non-toucher I prefer to say the Jack is ditched.
If everyone used that term then live or dead really becomes meaningless, as a ditched jack can
only be moved legitimately by a toucher.

                                                           MAGAZINE BINDERS
                                                          MAGAZINE BINDERS
Some years ago I purchased a number of
                                                          magazine Binders Embossed with the
magazine name in gold on the spine with
an embossed gold bowler logo. These
were for those who like to store their mag-
azines properly. Each binder held 3 years copies of the magazine and they
have sold very slowly indeed and I still have some left (10) and I started with
50 well over 10 years ago.
Unfortunately the Embossed Binders are much more expensive today and
I have to order a minimum of 50, so I do not intend to repeat the exercise as I

will never sell them all. However, magazine binders are fairly easy to buy and
I would recomend getting them from Modern Bookbinders. You don’t need to
punch holes in your magazines and you can buy these from EBAY.
Looking at a recent Advert, a single A4 Binder was priced at £9.50 plus
the dreaded postage of £2.90. Buy more than one and additions postgae in
£1.50 per Binder. Ouch you may say but one Binders holds 13 magazine which
covers 3 years of quarterly issues plus an extra issue. However, if you order
directly off their website at http://modernbookbinders.com, they tell me it is
£10.50 per Binder including UK postage.

The Cordex ones can be a little fiddly sliding the magazines in as they
store the magazines using a cord through the centre pages so they can still
be easily read. Don’t forget you need an A4 Binder.
