Finalists North West
Jean Parkinson picked up 4 shots while the youthful
Hannah Cochrane’s rink dropped 8 shots on the last 2
ends to leave Western 31 – 23 up at half time. It was
North West who made the better start to the second
half and by the 3rd end had virtually wiped out the
deficit. The game seemed to swing in Western’s favour
when Jean Carson scored 7 on the 5th end against the
highly experienced Fiona McDermott to put her side 13
shots up.
North West
to their credit did Oriel Zone Convenor
not fold. McDer- Gerry O’Hare receives the

next 4 ends, the youthful Shauna O’Neill picked up 8 over
the same period and Joanne McIntyre 4 shots. With 2 games
to be completed only 2 shots separated the teams.
McDermott was lying shot but Carson removed the
North West Convenor Colleen
Cochrane receives the lying bowl and with Esther Foster lying 1 for Western the title
Runners-up cup from headed West. It was an excellent game, played in a very
IIBA President Flo McNally sporting manner. It was a well deserved win for Western,
their first win for over 10 years.
ORIEL WIN THE BOOMER CUP
ORIEL WIN THE BOOMER CUP
This year’s men’s inter zone featured Oriel who had contested the previous four finals only losing
out in 2016 to Mid Ulster and North West who had a number of the very successful junior side in
their ranks. Oriel were clear favourites to retain their title with the finals as their only ‘away’ games
for 3 years, something which proved a major advantage.
The first half only served to highlight Oriel’s position as favourites as they dominated two of
the first 3 games. On mat 1, the North West rink skipped by Brian Rankin were never in the game
against Gerry McCabe. They had suffered a heavy semi final defeat and were not faring any better
this time winning only 2 ends in a 13-3 defeat.
