Douglas Bowls Club staged their Annual Licensed Triples Competition for Douglas Credit Union
Perpetual Trophy in the Douglas H.& F. Club Pavilion over a seven day period, with 306 players
in 102 teams, proving to be yet another great success
When the quarter-finals were completed the following reached the semi-finals, Carrigaline
GAA’s Kay Galvin, Paddy Tierney & Maurice Hayes, Wilton’s Helen Burrows, Margaret Moynihan
& Hubert Burrows, Crosshaven’s Mary, Keith & Conor Middleton and Ballynoe’s Michael McCarthy,
Nora Mulcahy & Denis Mulcahy. In the semi-finals draw the Carrigaline GAA team beat Wilton’s
Helen Burrows, Margaret Moynihan & Hubert Burrows, whilst Crosshaven beat Ballynoe (Michael
McCarthy, Nora Mulcahy & Denis Mulcahy)
In the final played over nine ends Crosshaven’s Mary, Keith & Conor Middleton eventually
defeated Carrigaline G.A.A’s Kay Galvin, Paddy Tierney & Maurice Hayes, after a very close and
exciting game. At first it seemed Carrigaline would romp to victory with an opening run of 2 - 3 - 3,
giving them an 8 - 0 lead. A single to Crosshaven was followed by a no scoring end and it possibly
looked all over but a stunning full house six to Crosshaven put them right back into the final and
buoyed by this stunner they took the closing three ends with a total of four shots and a winning
score of 11 - 8, in a final of two distinct halves.
The umpires on duty for the final session were Hazel Foley, Geraldine Keane, Hilary Loftus,
John Murphy and Sean O’Suilleabhain. The individual prizes were presented by Aidan Delea the
Douglas BC Chairperson and Eileen O’Mahony the club secretary presented the Perpetual Trophy
to Conor Middleton Middleton, the Skip of the winning team.

B.E.D.A. Bowls Club staged their Annual Licensed Triples Competition over a weekend in the Ban-
don Grammar School Sports Hall, Bandon. The competition attracted a large entry of 67-teams
(201-Players). At the quarter final stage, Glenview’s Jim Byrne, John O’Gorman & Michael O’Ri-
ordan beat Douglas Community School’s P. Rohan, E. O’Sullivan & M. Condon but the other
D.C.S. went one better, with Sheila O’Driscoll, Mary Boland & John O’Driscoll beating Carrigaline
GAA’s M. Galvin, P. Tierney & M. Hayes.
Grange/Frankfield’s Sioban Breen, Phyllis Long & John Long also got the better of their op-
ponents, beating Cathedral Parish’s R. Looney, M. Doolan & D. Dennehy. The final qualifiers were
Ballincollig GAA’s Mary Boyde, Sheila O’Leary & Martin Sisk, disposing of Grange/Frankfield’s S.
O’Sullivan, J. Swanick & B. Shaw-Hamilton.
In the semi-finals the D.C.S. triple led by John O’Driscoll edged through to the final beating
Glenview’s Jim Byrne, John O’Gorman & Michael O’Riordan. Also making it through to the final,
Skip Martin Sisk led his Ballincollig team to victory over Grange/Frankfield’s Sioban Breen, Phyllis
& John Long.
In the nine end final, Douglas Community School struck first with an opening two but
Ballincollig GAA immediately fought back with a three followed by a single to D.C.S who levelled
the score and then followed this up with a two to lead 5 - 3. An exchange of singles over the next
three ends saw D.C.S. still in front at 7 - 4. Ballincollig GAA then scored a three to level the final
at 7 - 7. The final end was a hard fought exciting affair on which the D.C.S. team of Sheila O’-
Driscoll, Mary Boland & John O’Driscoll scored a vital two to beat Ballincollig GAA Mary Boyde,
Sheila O’Leary & Martin Sisk after a very close and exciting game
The Umpires on duty for the final session were Eddie Bannon, Gerty Stroker & Hazel Foley.
The individual prizes were presented by Ken Kennedy, who also presented the Perpetual Trophy
to the winning Skip John O’Driscoll.
ED - if anyone wonders why Ireland are generally top dogs at Short Mat Bowls, the entries
for the above four events were 371 teams and 1,113 players, in just a month. To us in Eng-
land these are mind boggling figures, which we can only dream about, so wonder no more!
