Both semi-finals were somewhat one- 25
sided, the Wonford pair quickly estab-
lished an 8 - 1 lead after just four
ends, helped by successive three’s
and the Odcombe team had no an-
swer, losing 12 - 5.
Aptly named, the A&M Flyers
went off like a rocket and led 9 - 0
after five ends. The Leighs 11 could
only answer with singles and eventu-
ally lost 10 - 4.
The final was a cracking hard Fours winners Eric Pavey, Andy Thompson,
fought match that swung both ways at Malcom Sheen and Carol Osborne
times. After four ends the Wonford
team held a 6 - 2 advantage, back came the A&M Flyers taking the next four ends scoring
seven shots in the process to lead 9 - 6. The Wonford Pair tried hard but eventually ran out
of ends and lost by the slender single shot margin of 9 - 8.

So what’s this apology for? Well last year the ESMBA repeated their
desire to use the magazine to publish their news for the benefit of its
members and players. I printed a lot of extra magazines, which cost
me hundreds of pounds so that they could send them to their clubs,
which included a letter promising to use the magazine. On the
strength of this a number of new subscribers came on board.
Since then the ESMBA have sent me “absolutely bugger all”
and I feel they have basically cheated everyone with the promise they made. A little while
ago I said I was going to publish this apology and I was asked not to by the ESMBA. I held
back hoping that they would make an effort
but “bugger all” was once again the result.
I have been a supporter of our sport
since I joined the ESMBA Committee late in
the first year of its existence (1984). It is a
great sport and its clubs and players deserve
the best efforts of the ESMBA, which I feel
they don’t get. This is my personal apology
for being part of the unfulfilled promise. I
helped by printing the mailshot magazines
with the best intentions and I believed what
the ESMBA said.
I am a straightforward and honest guy
and will continue to publish the magazine in
the best interest of publicity for our sport for
as long as I can. I had hoped all those years
ago that we would become a dynamic and
progressive sport but to paraphrase the
words of Winston Churchill “ I thought we
were throwing a wildcat onto the beach, in-
stead of which we got a stranded Whale”.
That is my personal view and it disappoints
me that no-one else seems to be bothered.
