CHARITY FOURS
CHARITY FOURS
Gully Howard Technical,
Sponsored by Gully Howard Technical, this Invitation
Charity Fours Competition was to mark our move to a new
venue. Sixteen teams arrived from Devon, Dorset, Bristol,
Gloucester, Hereford, Wiltshire, North Hampshire, Surrey
and West Sussex to compete in what turned out to be a
great days bowling. Matches were all of a very high stan-
dard due to most players being at County level and this pro-
duced some excellent bowling.
Four groups of four competed against each other as
well as two teams from other groups. There were individual group winners but the overall cham-
pions for the day were the team 'Woolhope' from Hereford, who despite suffering illness pulled
through and won the day.
Gully Howard Technical,
The Portsmouth based company Gully Howard Technical, sponsored the event at our
new home, The Springwood Centre, which is a charity run partnership who help the local com-
munity and organises a variety of events throughout the year. We were pleased with how the
day went, especially hosting a lunch and dessert for all those who attended and the feedback
we have received has been overwhelming and very positive. Due to the success and the feed-
back we will be hosting the event again in 2019.
FIXING FENDERS
FIXING FENDERS
I recently Umpired at a tournament and I noticed a number of
fenders that were moved and thought there must be a way to
keep them in place, other than using Velcro like some clubs do.
I thought of that ‘Under rug’ non slip stuff might work, so I
ordered some from a well known company and we tried it at our
club. I cut strips from the roll and put it under the fenders. The fenders never moved all evening
even when bowls hit them. Our clubs anti-slip is fixed temporarily with double sided tape. I am
thinking, now we know it works, is fixing it with PVA glue. I cut two and a half inch strips from the
rolls.
They were still in the original place by the end of the evening, I will be putting some on all
our fenders now. It really does work very well and I think it would be good to pass this on to
other clubs and counties.

ED - I have withheld the name of the company as Carpet non-slip stuff is available from a number
of sources, including EBAY and I have also seen it in some £1 style shops. It is not sticky in any
way, so it is not Carpet Tape. It is usually very cheap indeed for the quantity you get.
I use it on the front leather passenger seat in my Bristol car, which does not have seat
belts and it prevents anyone sliding off under breaking!. It comes in different colours but is com-
monly White or Black but I have seen it in Grey or Yellow. The colour is irrelevant as it’s under
the fender, you just cut it to size.
