G.J. BAWDEN TROPHY
4 G.J. BAWDEN TROPHY
This was the fourth annual Goodleigh Short Mat charity
tournament and was held in the Goodleigh Village Hall. The
event was sponsored by G.J. Bawden Haulage but very
sadly Gordon Bawden recently passed away after a long
illness. Gordon was an inspirational member of this com-
munity for many years and his support of our Village Hall is
legendary.
We are delighted to have the continued sponsorship
of G.J. Bawden Haulage and the support of Mary Bawden
and their son Andrew for this Charity Tournament. Their
generosity has provided us with a very desirable trophy and
mementos for the first, second and third placed.
Proceeds from this year’s tournament will be shared
between Goodleigh Village Hall and North Devon

After a full days play and 5
games for each team no-one re-
mained undefeated and only
two teams had lost a single
game. Bishops Nympton
opened up their day with a 9 - 2
win over Mutterton but lost their
next game by 9 - 3 to Bid-
disham.
They then bounced back
with wins over Westward Ho!,
Woolsery and Christchurch.
Winkleigh lost their first
match 4 - 4 to South Molton but
won then beat Shebbear by 11 -
Mary Bawden with winners Bishops Nympton, 4 and followed this with wins
Luke Adams, Betty & Peter Norton over Fremington, Shirwell
and Alverdiscott.
When all the points and shots were
added up, Bishops Nympton’s last
game win of 12 - 0 proved crucial as
the leap frogged Winkleigh to win
the tournament with 8 points and a
plus of 30 shots.
Winkleigh managed a plus of
just four in their last game and
ended up second with 8 points and
a plus of 24 shots. Third place went
to South Molton with 6 points and a
plus of 3 shots. The teams were pre-
sented with their trophies by Mary
Bawden.
